Feedback is part of all learning. Biofeedback assisted coaching or counseling is using
electronic instruments to accurately measure, process and “feed back” INFORMATION about
Mind/Body interactions. Much like using a thermometer to measure your temperature, if you do
not measure it you probably could not accurately guess it The feedback can be about helpful or
harmful activity in the muscles or nervous system. The feedback is provided in the form of
Sound or Visual displays that change in response to changes in the Body. The purpose of this
approach is to help learn greater voluntary control over Mind/Body changes, which contribute to
troubling symptoms. When successful the instrumentation and feedback is replaced by new
learned, helpful responses. This learning process is best achieved by working with a well-
trained professional.

Biofeedback instruments measure muscle activity, skin temperature, electro dermal  activity -
(skin sweating), respiration, heart rate, heart rate variability, blood pressure, brain electrical
activity and brain blood flow. Research shows that biofeedback, in combination with other
behavioral therapies and interventions is a helpful learning process supporting health.

Biofeedback is commonly thought of as a treatment but is really a tool used in various
professional disciplines to add effectiveness to other helping methods. The Coach or Therapist
may use biofeedback to assist in the process of learning mental/physical relaxation strategies
and skills to reduce anxiety and it’s negative effects on health or interference in goal
achievement.

Biofeedback is  a set of training tools used along other methods to help you achieve your goals.  
One set of skills specifically taught is Self-Regulation techniques like progressive muscle
relaxation, autogenic training (modifying blood flow), visualization, diaphragmatic breathing and
modification of thinking habits (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), which maintain tension. These
techniques are all integrated in a foundation of self awareness or Mindfulness enhanced by
feedback to  help achieve goals.

When combined these methods help you gain a greater awareness and control over generally
unconscious emotional and physical responses to stresses or demands in your life.

Biofeedback is used in many different environments including schools (for improving
concentration), in sports (for optimizing functioning and performance), clinical environments (to
help people learn to recognize when physiological systems are not behaving normally and to
learn to correct their functioning), and many others.
The coaching and training process helps you learn how to change habits of responding to
maximize health, mental, physical, and emotional functioning.

Biofeedback technology is used to provide extra information beyond the ability of normal
senses and awareness about some bodily function (including brain-waves).  The person first
uses the information as feedback to increase awareness or mindfulness of the changes in the
body / mind function.  Then, the feedback is used to learn to develop new levels of voluntary
control over the function.

Usually people use the skills to bring aspects of their life into better balance and to function at a
higher, more optimal level.  For example, if they have anxiety, stress, attention or performance
problems,or stress aggravated health problems these will often respond very well to
biofeedback training, potentially either disappearing altogether or decreasing in frequency,
intensity and duration.  

Once you learn to voluntarily control of what were previously involuntarily, subconsciously, or
habitually controlled responses and behaviors, you can then develop new, positive automatic
self-regulated habits.
