The Stress Response can affect our wellbeing, blood vessels and organs and
emotional health. It speeds up heart rate and respiration, raises blood pressure and
body temperature, and can interfere with metabolism, appetite, digestion, sexuality,
fertility, and sleep. It can shut down a woman's menstrual cycle and can decrease a
man's production of testosterone, effecting his fertility. Stress weakens our
immune system, can exacerbate depression, and effects memory by shrinking a
crucial part of our brain, possibly permanently. It can contribute to obesity, and if
allowed to progress unchecked, stress can worsen many physical and mental
health problems.
The science supporting these conclusions is well researched. If the body and
mind don't have a chance to recover, the effects of chronic stress compound, with
a longer-lasting and potentially more harmful effect on our health. Three 10 year
studies concluded that emotional stress was more predictive of death from cancer
and cardiovascular disease than smoking, People who were unable to manage
their stress had a 40% higher death rate than non-stressed individuals. Eysenck,
H. Br J Med Psychology: 1988:61(Pt 1):57-75.
In fact, chronic stress is a significant factor in many visits to Physician offices.
The Stress Response or the "Fight or Flight" response has well researched and
documented effects.

It is important to learn the Relaxation Response described by Herbert Benson, M.
D., from Harvard Medical Schools Mind/Body Services and the Restful Awareness
Response by David Simon, M.D., co-director of the Chopra Center. This natural
restful ability is measurable and facilitates the following physiologic changes.
